Warren Baker

President Emeritus, California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo

Warren J. Baker was appointed a charter member of CCST in 1989 and served on the Council until 1996 when he was appointed to the Board of Directors. He is President Emeritus of California Polytechnic State University, where he served as President from 1979 through 2010. He was the Chrysler Professor, Dean of Engineering and Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Detroit 1966-1979. He is a licensed Civil Engineer in California, with BSCE and MSCE degrees from the University of Notre Dame and a Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of New Mexico. He was a consultant with Woodward/Clyde Associates, an NSF Visiting Faculty Fellow at M.I.T. and a Research Associate at the U.S. Air Force Civil Engineering Research Facility-University of New Mexico where he consulted and conducted research in soil dynamics, soil structure interaction and probabilistic methods in geotechnical engineering. He was Chair of the ASCE Civil Engineering Research Foundation, a member of the publications committee for the ASCE Journal of Geotechnical Engineering, and Chair of the ASCE National Committee on Reliability and Probabilistic Methods in Geotechnical Engineering. He was a member of the Dean"s Advisory Council for the College of Engineering at UC Berkeley.

In 1985 Dr. Baker was appointed by the President to the National Science Board and reappointed in 1988 serving until 1994. During his tenure on the NSB he served for six years as Chair of the Program and Plans Committee, four years as Chair of the Polar Research Committee, and six years on the Executive Committee. He was a member of the Board of Directors for the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges and chaired the NASULGC Commission on Information Technology.

He was a member of the National Business Higher Education Forum and co-chaired the STEM Education Initiative, a member of the Board of Directors of the California Council for Environmental and Economic Balance, and a member of the Environmental Technology Advisory Council for the State of California.
