Tinoco is Professor in the Graduate School at the University of CA, Berkeley. He is also Faculty Senior Scientist, Physical Biosciences Division, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

He received his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin in 1954 and was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Yale University from 1954-56. His honors and awards include: Guggenheim Fellow, Medical Research Council Laboratory, Cambridge, 1964; recipient of the California Section Award, American Chemical Society, 1965; and elected membership in the National Academy of Sciences, 1985, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 2001. His professional membership includes the American Chemical Society, the American Physical Society, the Biophysics Society, and American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
