GCAS300As the state-created science advisory body to the California government, the California Council on Science and Technology (CCST) is proud to join with the Governor’s Office of Planning and Research (OPR) in presenting the “Science and Education Celebration” at #GCAS2018.

Hosted in partnership with the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the University of California Office of the President, California EPA, and Ten Strands, OPR’s Science and Education Celebration evening event will take place on Tuesday, September 11, 2018, following the Global Climate Action Summit’s Science to Action Day at The Exploratorium in San Francisco.

The invitation-only gathering serves to recognize the important role of research and education in the State of California – where investments in scientific knowledge and research training are paving the way to solutions and insights towards climate change adaptation and planning. The guest list will span GCAS delegates as well as leaders from California’s research, industry, philanthropic, and government sectors.

“CCST was created to deliver science advice to California’s state leaders,” says Amber Mace PhD, CCST Interim Executive Director. “The Global Climate Action Summit is a paramount example of how we can bring scientists and decision makers together over common dialog, and CCST is honored to assist the Governor’s Office of Planning and Research in hosting this exciting evening of networking and celebration.”

“The Moore Foundation values scientific research and engineering, both to advance knowledge in new directions and to solve societal challenges,” adds Jon Kaye PhD, a program director at the philanthropy. “We also believe in the importance of improving society’s understanding of the inherent value of science and taking an evidence-based perspective in policymaking and in our personal and civic lives. We are proud to partner with CCST and OPR for this event where these values are placed front and center.”

Appropriately, during the evening, CCST will be presenting a “Climate Science Translators Showcase” (#CCSTShowcase) – featuring 12 graduate students and postdoctoral researchers from California’s top research institutions. These early career scientists will practice their budding craft for communicating science in a conversational, networking format – on hand to chat with guests and delegates about timely topics such as decarbonizing energy grids in developing economies; assessing carbon storage value of mangrove forests; preparing California agriculture for future warming; and analyzing strategies for sustainable beef production.

The evening also coincides with CCST’s 30th anniversary celebration (#CCST30th). CCST was established in September 1988 via Assembly Concurrent Resolution 162 (Farr) as a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization which would respond to the Governor, the Legislature, and other State entities on policy questions relating to science and technology. The Council itself is comprised of nearly 30 distinguished leaders in academia, industry, and policy, while the CCST partner network spans the UC System, California State University, Caltech, Stanford, NASA Ames Research Center, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.

About the Global Climate Action Summit

The 2018 Global Climate Action Summit, hosted in San Francisco on Sept. 12-14, will bring together state and local governments, businesses and citizens from around the world to showcase climate action taking place, thereby demonstrating how the tide has turned in the race against climate change and inspiring deeper national commitments in support of the Paris Agreement. To keep global warming well below 2 degrees Celsius, and ideally pursue 1.5 degrees – temperatures that could lead to catastrophic consequences – worldwide emissions must start trending downward. The Summit will showcase climate action around the world, along with bold new commitments, to give world leaders the confidence that they can go even further by 2020. The Summit’s five headline challenge areas are Healthy Energy Systems, Inclusive Economic Growth, Sustainable Communities, Land and Ocean Stewardship, and Transformative Climate Investments. A series of reports is set to be launched over the coming months and at the Summit, underlining the contribution of states and regions, cities, businesses, investors, and civil society, also known as “non-party stakeholders,” to national and international efforts to address climate change. Many partners are supporting the Summit, including The Climate Group; the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group; Business for Social Responsibility (BSR); CAN International; Ceres; WWF; and Mission 2020.
