Born and raised in El Paso, Texas, Kate moved to Austin to pursue a PhD exploring how infection during pregnancy impacts fetal brain growth and susceptibility to autism. Misinformation about the origins of autism drew her into science policy and she spent a summer in Washington, D.C. at the NIH working on the congressional justification.
