SACRAMENTO, Calif.—Dustin Schroeder, PhD, a prominent science and engineering researcher at Stanford University known for his work in glaciology, geophysics, and climate science, has been appointed to the California Council on Science and Technology (CCST) Board of Directors as Stanford University’s representative.
Dr. Schroeder holds faculty appointments at Stanford University in Geophysics and Electrical Engineering, is a senior fellow at the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment, and a faculty affiliate in the Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI). In 2023, Dr. Schroeder was named a Bass University Fellow in Undergraduate Education at Stanford University and currently serves as the Associate Chair of Geophysics. His expertise includes developing and applying radar techniques to observe and interpret the behavior of ice sheets, which is crucial for predicting future changes in global sea levels. Dr. Schroeder’s research combines fieldwork, satellite data, and advanced modeling to provide insights into the physical processes driving ice sheet and glacier dynamics.
“We’re pleased to welcome Dustin to our Board,” said Board Chair Peter Cowhey, PhD. “His commitment to understanding and addressing climate change, along with his groundbreaking research, align with our mission to provide scientific solutions to the most pressing challenges facing California. We look forward to his valuable contributions and insights as we work together to advance science and technology policy.”
Dr. Schroeder serves in various Board and Committee roles, including Co-Chair of the Instruments & Future Technologies Committee, IEEE GRSS, and Council Member of the International Glaciological Society. He is also Scientific Editor of the Journal of Glaciology.
Dr. Schroeder’s appointment fulfills one of 11 board positions that represent CCST’s partner institutions: the University of California, California State University System, National Laboratories, California Institute of Technology, Stanford University, the University of California, and the California Community College System. The remaining eight independent board positions represent California’s business, policy, and philanthropic communities. The Board of Directors supports CCST’s mission to provide independent and objective advice to policymakers on public policy issues important to the State of California.
