Dr. Edward Moses was the keynote speaker at the CCST dinner program held in Sacramento, California on February 2, 2005. Moses is the project leader for the National ignition Facility (NIF) Project at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and principal deputy for NIF Programs that integrate laser, optics, information systems, and high-energy density experimental science with the goal of fusion ignition in the laboratory.
Dr. Moses earned his B.S. degree and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Cornell University. He has held positions at Hughes Aircraft Company and Advanced Technology Applications, Inc. Dr. Moses has held various leadership positions at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory since 1980. He holds patents in laser technology and computational physics.
California is home to some of the most spectacular science research programs in the World, and the NIF Project at Lawrence Livermore is one of these. His presentation, “Building and Using the National Ignition Facility, the World’s Largest Laser” provided an overview of the NIF, the world’s largest laser and its uses in national security, basic science and our energy future. The NIF Project is a 192-beam experimental laser facility that will access regimes of extreme pressures and temperature. The NIF will be a key component of the Department of Energy’s Stockpile Stewardship Program.
