Dr. William A. Wulf, president of the National Academy of Engineering and vice chair of the National Research Council, was the keynote speaker at a dinner program for CCST members and invited guests on Wednesday evening, February 26, 2003. Dr. Wulf’s address, The National Academies: Examples from Counter-Terrorism, explained how the National Academies function as objective advisors to the nation on issues of science, engineering and health. His presentation also provided a perspective on the relation of science and technology to the nation’s struggle against terrorism by using activities on counter-terrorism to illustrate the Academies’ function.
Wulf is on leave from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, where he is AT&T Professor of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Wulf has had a distinguished professional career that includes serving as assistant director of the National Science Foundation; chair and chief executive officer of Tartan Laboratories Incorporated, Pittsburgh; and professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh. He is the author of more than 80 papers and technical reports, has written three books, and holds two U.S. patents.
