Susan Kunze recently retired from her position as a second grade teacher at Bishop Elementary School in the Bishop Unified School District in Inyo County, where she taught since 1985. She was honored to receive the Presidential Award in Mathematics and Science Teaching (Elementary Mathematics) in 2008.
Mrs. Kunze graduated from Point Loma Nazarene University in 1975, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Ryan Act Multiple Subject Credential. In 1982, she completed a Master of Education degree in Elementary Education (Curriculum and Instructional Methodologies) at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
Mrs. Kunze is a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Council of Presidential Awardees in Mathematics, and the California Mathematics Council, where she has been a frequent conference presenter. She has been an educational resource writer for a number of projects, including the Smarter Balanced Digital Library, NCTM Illuminations Writing Group, the LearnZillion Dream Team, and Common Sense Media, through a project with CalTAC. Mrs. Kunze was a member of the 2013 California State Common Core Mathematics Framework Committee and the ELA/ELD Adoption Committee. As an author, she has written articles on STEM subjects for several magazines and has designed learning activities for a number of STEM educational products. She is the author of teacher resource books, including several in the Scholastic Play and Learn Math series (Play and Learn Math: Hundred Chart, Number Sense, Time and Money, and Number Line), and Evan-Moor Publications Ten Minute Activities, Grades 1-3 and Grammar and Punctuation for Grade 2.
Kunze joined CalTAC in 2012.
