Jason John, PhD, is the Deputy Director of CCST. As the Deputy Director, Jason brings his passion for science and policy together with his experience in developing collaborative partnerships across academia, non-profits, and state service. He oversees the expansion and coordination of CCST’s science services, communications and outreach, and the CCST Science and Technology Policy Fellowship program.
Jason previously served as Acting Director of Sierra Club California where he oversaw engagement with California policy on conservation, renewable energy, transportation, and industrial decarbonization. Prior to that, Jason was the Science and Policy Lead for the California Natural Resource Agency’s Biodiversity and Habitat Team where he helped develop the state’s Pathways to 30×30 strategy, as well as working on CNRA’s Cutting Green Tape and other habitat restoration initiatives. He was also a CCST Science and Technology Policy Fellow with CNRA in 2021-2022. Prior to working in policy, Jason worked for 12 years in biomedical and conservation biology, including working with state, federal, and non-profit conservation partners and multiple research seasons at the National Science Foundation’s McMurdo Station in Antarctica.
Jason graduated with a BS in Biological Sciences from Santa Clara University and a PhD in Physiological Ecology from the University of California Santa Cruz.
