Cherry Murray

Cherry A. Murray is the dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the John A. and Elizabeth S. Armstrong Professor of Engineering and Applied Sciences and professor of physics at Harvard University. Previously, Murray served as the principal associate director for science and technology at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where her administrative responsibilities included overseeing the quality of science and technology in the laboratory’s scientific and technical programs and disciplines. Before joining Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in 2004, she served for over twenty years at Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies.

Murray is a physicist who has been nationally recognized for her work in surface physics, light scattering and complex fluids. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She has served on the governing boards of the National Research Council and Argonne National Laboratory, and the Executive Board and Council of the National Academy of Sciences. Murray is also a fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). She served as president of the American Physical Society during 2009, and is currently on the Board of Directors, AAAS. In 1989, she won the APS Maria Goeppert-Mayer Award and was awarded the 2005 APS George Pake Prize. She is the author of two patents and more than 75 publications. She won the National Award of Technology and Innovation in 2014.
