President
Dr. Michael V. Drake, M.D. is the President of The Ohio State University. He had been Chancellor at University of California, Irvine since 2005. Dr. Drake served as a Vice President for Health Affairs at University of California. He serves as a Director of California HealthCare Foundation. He serves as a Director of Bank of the West and Commonwealth Fund. Dr. Drake is a member of several national scientific and scholarly societies. In 1998, he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Medicine. He serves as president of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and serves as a trustee of the Association of Academic Health Centers. Prior to his appointment in the Office of Health Affairs, Dr. Drake was Steven P. Shearing Professor of Ophthalmology and the senior associate dean for admissions and extramural academic programs at the UC San Francisco School of Medicine and served as its administrator. In this role, he was responsible for University of California’s admissions process and educational outreach programs, and also served as a clinician, physician-scientist and teacher. His research activities continue to receive extramural funding. By arrangement, he retains his appointment as Shearing Professor of Ophthalmology at UCSF, and maintains a limited clinical research-based academic practice. He served as Member of Health Policy Advisory Board of Gilead Sciences Inc. Dr. Drake has received a number of awards for teaching, public service, mentoring and research, including the School of Medicine’s Clinical Teaching Award, the Chancellor’s Award for Public Service and the Martin Luther King Jr. Award. He was selected by three recent graduating classes as the commencement speaker for the UCSF School of Medicine, was the School of Medicine Alumnus of the Year for 2000, and was inducted into the Gold Headed Cane Society in 2003. He received his medical degree from UC- San Francisco and his undergraduate degree from the Stanford University.
